Week 2 & 3 wrap-up

The Scrubjays dropped two tough match-ups against quality league opponents over the last week.

WEEK 2

A rain-out forced the Scrubs to flock together for an unusual Thursday game against the Fighting Green Weasels. Despite a strong showing in numbers for the Jays, the bats were cold and the Weasels limited errors in the field. The mighty Scrubjays fell, 15-7, but toss out a 7-run 2nd inning by the Weasels and you have a game.


WEEK 3

The following Monday, drizzly field conditions couldn't keep the Scrubjays gloves from shining. They put together 4 consecutive scoreless innings against the Killer Watts, in part thanks to Don "Hoppe Birthday" (and a Hoppe New Year!)'s pitching.

The Scrubjays were missing one player, so they played only 3 outfielders. The Watts deftly managed to squeeze a few dribblers through the gaps, but Sean "SS" Saville, Rachel "Kramer vs." Kramer, and Bentley "Gentles" Johnson made play after play to limit the runs.

The infield was practically error free. Dan "Shedds With Wolves" Shedd anchored the quorum that flaunted their catlike speed and reflexes. Mary Ellen "Ball Bustin" Kustin yelped even as she was scooping up grounders and throwing runners out, Justin "Speed Sandals" Allegro demonstrated considerable reach on one particular web gem, and Jared "LeMone" Mott look very GQ at first base in his tearaway warmup pants.

Maggie Germano is making co-Managers Bentley and Peter "Amos" LaFontaine look like GM geniuses with their decision to pull her up to the Big Leagues from the minors. She knew when to have Don pull out his signature knuckleball, when to call for the heater, and when to peg their best hitters (every time). She knocked in 3 RBI's in the game, and the contact was infectious. The Scrubjay bats gave them a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. Sean Saville was smacking balls into the outfield, Allegro and Kustin were running the bases like pros, and Kramer was finding more holes than a meerkat.

The Cheers n' Beers section of Kolleen "Betcha can't pronounce" Kawa and Ellie the Young Pup gave the team all the motivation they needed to win. It was not to be, however, as The Watts pulled off some last-minute heroics to rally for the go-ahead run in the 7th after a close play at the plate, and the Scrubjays fell, 11-10. But the improvement and grit that was on display was incredible, and the flipcup skill at "The Bottom Line" drinking establishment following the game was even more inspiring. The Scrubs look to build off their improved play in the last game as they prepare for NRDC next Monday.
