The Scrubjays dropped two tough match-ups against quality league opponents over the last week.
WEEK 2
A rain-out forced the Scrubs to flock together for an unusual Thursday game against the Fighting Green Weasels. Despite a strong showing in numbers for the Jays, the bats were cold and the Weasels limited errors in the field. The mighty Scrubjays fell, 15-7, but toss out a 7-run 2nd inning by the Weasels and you have a game.
WEEK 3
The following Monday, drizzly field conditions couldn't keep the Scrubjays gloves from shining. They put together 4 consecutive scoreless innings against the Killer Watts, in part thanks to Don "Hoppe Birthday" (and a Hoppe New Year!)'s pitching.
The Scrubjays were missing one player, so they played only 3 outfielders. The Watts deftly managed to squeeze a few dribblers through the gaps, but Sean "SS" Saville, Rachel "Kramer vs." Kramer, and Bentley "Gentles" Johnson made play after play to limit the runs.
The infield was practically error free. Dan "Shedds With Wolves" Shedd anchored the quorum that flaunted their catlike speed and reflexes. Mary Ellen "Ball Bustin" Kustin yelped even as she was scooping up grounders and throwing runners out, Justin "Speed Sandals" Allegro demonstrated considerable reach on one particular web gem, and Jared "LeMone" Mott look very GQ at first base in his tearaway warmup pants.
Maggie Germano is making co-Managers Bentley and Peter "Amos" LaFontaine look like GM geniuses with their decision to pull her up to the Big Leagues from the minors. She knew when to have Don pull out his signature knuckleball, when to call for the heater, and when to peg their best hitters (every time). She knocked in 3 RBI's in the game, and the contact was infectious. The Scrubjay bats gave them a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. Sean Saville was smacking balls into the outfield, Allegro and Kustin were running the bases like pros, and Kramer was finding more holes than a meerkat.
The Cheers n' Beers section of Kolleen "Betcha can't pronounce" Kawa and Ellie the Young Pup gave the team all the motivation they needed to win. It was not to be, however, as The Watts pulled off some last-minute heroics to rally for the go-ahead run in the 7th after a close play at the plate, and the Scrubjays fell, 11-10. But the improvement and grit that was on display was incredible, and the flipcup skill at "The Bottom Line" drinking establishment following the game was even more inspiring. The Scrubs look to build off their improved play in the last game as they prepare for NRDC next Monday.

Cue up the band
Have you always wanted to step into the batter's box accompanied by the mellow sounds of John Denver? Wu-Tang Clan? Nickelback (heaven forbid...)? Now you can! Your coaches are compiling a mix cd and we want to hear from you. Jared Mott likes to hit homers while listening to 2LiveCrew; what song gets you pumped up?

Scrubs Outslug the Slugs
Starting the season off with a bang, your hometeam Scrubjays pulled out a narrow 28-6 victory over the Pew Tree Sluggers. Every player had at least one hit, and extra props go to:
Sweet Pat Fitzgerald -- For pitching a gem and aiming a steady stream of insults at the opposing squad.
Aislinn Maestas -- Who says the Communications Team is uncoordinated? Not I, after Masher Maestas knocked in 2 runs with gusto.
Maggie "Mary" Germano -- For out-Erica'ing Erica, legging out extra bases on a swinging bunt.
Dan Shedds With Wolves Starring Kevin Costner was the MVP, as chosen by the Tree Sluggers -- gracious even in defeat. Coach Bentos decided that softball was less important than basketball, and left the game early, to which we say "boo" and "we didn't want you there anyway but please don't leave us, we've just been hurt before and are still vulnerable."
Thanks to our cheerznbeers section and to all of our team for a game well played!

League Rules
Pay attention my little Scrubbies...
RULES.
1. Teams must have a minimum of seven people to play, including at least 3 women on the field at all times (or no more than 7 men), otherwise, 10 players are on the field. Everyone present may be in the batting order, everyone in the batting order must play at least one inning in the field. If you only have 2 women, you must start each inning with 1 out, and play with 9 fielders. If you have only 1 woman, you must start each inning with 2 outs, and play with 8 fielders. If you have less than 7 people, you must forfeit (you can try to play with 7).
2. There are no called balls and strikes, there are NO walks! (Technical rules of slow pitch: The pitch must have an arc of at least 6 feet and no greater than 12 feet. The pitch may have backspin or forward-spin on the ball.) If the pitcher cannot get the ball over the plate properly, he/she should be replaced. Three consecutive swings and misses is a strike out; a foul ball/foul tip resets the counter, non-swings don't count. (This is to eliminate the 5-10 minute at bats with people who aren't even close to hitting the ball).
3. There are no umpires. Standard schoolyard rules: One base on an overthrow into out of play foul ground; if play is interfered with by tourists, ground rule double or wherever the batter was likely to end up; if fields have fences, home team decides home run v. ground-rule double rules before the game. Follow rules of baseball where you can. ALL controversial plays should be re-played if possible. Managers of both teams will discuss and resolve all disputes.
4. NO Alcohol. Just kidding. What’s softball, without beer? Just make sure the police don’t catch you. Notice how a softball glove perfectly hides a can? Funny that… (Be Careful – don't get us kicked off the Mall!)
5. NO Collisions. No Sliding. Any sliding on a close play will be an automatic out. (We don't want feet going into ankles, or head first sliding – recipes for injury.) But make sure infielders know not to stand on or in front of base – or they will be knocked down.
6. NO Stealing. Runners cannot leave the base until the ball is hit. If baserunner leaves before ball is hit, automatic out!
7. NO Metal Cleats. Rubber cleats or sneakers only.
8. Games won’t be played in Rain. If the weather is bad, the managers (or alternates) must agree to cancel and reschedule the game within 1 month. (Games not rescheduled within 1 month, will not go on to the final standings – it’s just too hard to reschedule old games).
9. Mercy Rule. A team that is leading can score no more than 10 runs in an inning. (examples: if it’s 0-0, a team can score 11 runs – 1 to take the lead then ten more; if the score is 10-5, the losing team can score 16 runs, 6 to take the lead then ten more, the leading team could only score 10) If one team leads by more than 15 runs, and both managers agree, game can be called.
10. NO Shows/Forfeits. Any team that forfeits more than 2 games will be removed from the league and ineligible for the playoffs. If there aren’t enough people to play 30 minutes after scheduled start, it’s a forfeit. Forfeits will happen, that’s fine. Don’t try to reschedule – rescheduling rain-outs should get priority!
11. Fields: We will play wherever we can, most likely on the fields between the Washington Monument and the WWII memorial, the mall south of the WWII memorial, or the Ellipse. The home team is responsible for procuring a field, unless they can arrange for the away team to do so. (To get a field you will need to send some to cordon off an area by 4:30pm and likely earlier in the height of the summer. This is a great intern project.) Person procuring fields must communicate with both teams to say where the field is.
12. Field Size: Base paths are 60 feet, pitching mound is between 35-40 feet from home plate. (Walk it off…guesstimate!)
13. Game Time. Games will start at 6pm (realistically: 6:15pm). Get there on time to warm-up, days get shorter in July and August – be on time!
